The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

WIAS invites applications for a

Research Assistant Position (f/m/d)

 (Ref. 24/13)

in the Research Group

“Partial Differential Equations“

(Acting Head: Dr. M. Liero) starting as soon as possible.

Field of work: Modeling with partial differential equations (PDEs) and their subsequent analysis. The position requires expertise in the analysis of PDEs using variational methods such as gradient-flow formulation, Gamma-convergence, and scaling laws. Special interest is directed toward problems in biomechanics, including mechanical interactions and pattern formation in hydrogels or biomembranes. The role also involves implementing numerical discretizations and conducting simulation studies in collaboration with external partners.

We are looking for:  A motivated, outstanding researcher with a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. The Ph.D. should be completed or very close to completion. The candidate should be willing to take on responsibility for interdisciplinary projects with external partners from physics, biology, or engineering. In particular, the successful candidate will have an interest in applied mathematics, especially applied analysis, and a strong background in at least three of the following areas:

  • Analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs),
  • Calculus of Variations,
  • Variational methods for problems with multiple scales,
  • Consistent modeling in continuum mechanics,
  • Pattern formation and phase transitions.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research leading to publications in international peer-reviewed journals,
  • Present results at international conferences and workshops,
  • Work interdisciplinary with cooperation partners.

What we offer:

  • Close mentorship: the postdoc candidate will receive responsible and careful mentorship. We emphasize fostering a healthy mentor-mentee relationship.
  • WIAS Berlin is a premier research institution known for its strength in optimization, optimal control, dynamical systems, and applied mathematics in general.
  • A certified (Audit berufundfamilie) family-friendly work environment.
  • Berlin is one of the most culture-rich and diverse international cities in the world. It offers endless opportunities to enjoy life outside work, while being very affordable compared to other major cities. Neither the job nor living in Berlin requires German language (although WIAS offers free German courses). We highly welcome international applications. Scientifically, Berlin offers a rich landscape with numerous opportunities for research, as well as job prospects in academia and industry.

Technical queries should be directed to Dr. Dirk Peschka (dirk.peschka@wias-berlin.de).

The position is remunerated according to TVöD Bund and is initially limited to two years.

The Weierstrass Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position. Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.

Please upload complete application documents including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates, and a copy of your Ph.D. thesis (or relevant publications) as soon as possible via our online job-application facility by 02.08.2024 using the button “Apply online”.

We are looking forward to your application!
